BIBB insulation is short for Blown-In-Blanket insulation. The name makes much more sense when you see it installed. A thin sheet of plastic is attached to the studs, rafters, trusses, or joists. A hole is punched into the polypropylene mesh about 4’ from the ground. Fiberglass insulation that looks like small pieces of shredded cotton is then pneumatically blown into the bottom of each cavity until it’s completely filled and slightly bulging the mesh. Another hole is punched into the mesh towards the top of the wall and the remainder of the cavity is pumped full. Because the insulation is made up of smaller pieces, it fills in all of the nooks and crannies in the spaces it’s pumped into, including around electrical conduit and plumbing. BIBB insulation is also highly desirable for it’s energy efficiency due to the fact that it doesn’t settle as it ages. The top of any cavity it’s pumped into will never have a gap where the insulation has settled, eliminating gaps where thermal energy would leak out. The fiberglass wools that make up the blowing material are also fire-resistant and moisture resistant, as well as being over 4 times more sound insulating than the standard batt insulation.
